Okay my brain definitely feels like it’s getting back into the swing of work thinking. That’s good.

@thomasfuchs now every language gets to be Perl.

hackers.town: 2024-08-28 Wed 20:26

okay what Linux-software packaging blockhead is putting
#!/usr/bin/env python3
in your packaged desktop applications? First it was lollypop, now gnome-tweaks

I don’t trust system Python. You’d think the system would’ve learned by now not to trust mine.

hackers.town: 2024-08-28 Wed 20:29

@cinebox yep exactly. It’s like “congrats gnome-tweaks, you have successfully failed to find Gnome library bindings in the venv for my static site generator”

(they specified python3 at least, but I was typing too fast to catch that)

hackers.town: 2024-08-28 Wed 20:49

Okay I can see why some folks like PaperWM. With the auto-layout, mouse friendliness, and choice of key binding mnemonics, it feels like — like —

my brain keeps saying “like if someone put CUA in a tiling window manager” which makes absolutely no sense

but it does kind of explain why I dislike it so much. Never did enjoy CUA.

hackers.town: 2024-08-28 Wed 21:01

@minego the ultrawide monitor makes me fussy about layout things that wouldn’t matter on a normal display, and reaching for key bindings that often don’t exist in defaults made for people with sane aspect ratios.

hackers.town: 2024-08-28 Wed 21:05

@minego I mean. I know this can be tweaked, but it’s an odd first impression and has me wanting to be on a more familiar, already tweaked desktop.

hackers.town: 2024-08-28 Wed 21:14

@minego Gnome Shell continues to know what’s best for its users, and although PaperWM appears to be more configurable, the defaults sit comfortably in that mindset.

@b0rk curoius if it’s something specific to following specific terminal emulation guidelines.
Oh and I don’t think I’ve seen it in Windows Terminal, and I know I’ve hit it clumsy enough to bounce off my current tab, so it’s not that my typing’s any better.

hackers.town: 2024-08-26 Mon 21:59

@jack a couple years in and I’ve worked many of those impulses out.

Proximity can provide a subtly different contextual meaning than links, and both are useful.

Directional links all through get overwhelming. so I rarely use them now.

Links are arbitrary colors by default in Kinopio, but you can narrow the options and define a meaning for them. I do that.

There’s more logical grouping one can do, like labeled groups. I’ll probably incorporate those here as things gel.

hackers.town: 2024-08-26 Mon 22:00

@jack and the numb is a genuine issue. Concept maps are great for the person or group who created them, and get progressively less useful the farther you get from the author(s).

@jack Brains are indeed wild! So most of the time my notes involve an outliner like Logseq. When I’m in more of a prose mode, Markdown or a rich text format like what SiYuan provides will do the trick. And sometimes none of that will do and I need to just dump small thoughts on a board and understand them by arranging them.

Brains are wild. ADHD brains are feral.

hackers.town: 2024-08-26 Mon 22:29

@jack we do not speak of the ten thousand special purpose notebooks

hackers.town: 2024-08-26 Mon 22:48

@jack Incidentally that anxiety about messing it up is why I use Kinopio rather than one of the more structured whiteboard concept map tools like Heptabase or Miro. You can make something real nice and organized in those. Which means you can really get it wrong.

Since the intentional limits of Kinopio mean you can never get it just-so, I can relax and not worry about screwing it up. Not worry as much anyways.

At least I recognized and spoke up when my social battery tapped out (main clue being that my brain started paying much closer attention to the thunder outside than the conversation in my headset) but oof I need to figure out how to get more capacity in there. Maybe fix the capacity warning.

It’s all “I’m good I’m good I’m good I’m done.”

Talking with my mom about weather systems, she jokes about how we’re old people doing small talk about the weather, and I kinda go off:

“I was just thinking about how much I’ve always enjoyed weather talk and thought it was unfair how folks maligned weather as small talk. It’s a tiny slice of a snapshot of a system so huge it dwarfs our imaginations, and that is the paper-thin layer protecting us from the rest of the universe. Small talk my ass.”

She’s not wrong. But still.
