Dendron is officially in maintenance mode

My Dendron notes from Graceful.Dev Reproducible Development with Containers

Kevin Lin, #announcements on Dendron Discord

…the tldr: we spent the past two years building a better way for humans to manage knowledge. While we made great strides there, as a business, we were ultimately not able to find product market fit for a venture backed business. After much soul searching, we’ve made the decision to do a pivot and pursue other business problems.

Aw, that’s disappointing. Dendron features prominently in my meta-note system. Dendron is the most nearly “just Markdown” of the “just Markdown” knowledge management systems out there. That makes it a safe spot to store and refactor the notes I gather with other tools. Excellent editor integration, too. Dendron kinda feels like core functionality to VS Code for me.

But in this time of tech layoffs and reprioritization, I guess it’s harder to sell core functionality than shiny shiny features.

It’s not the worst way to retire a project. They plan to keep the code alive, fixing bugs and reviewing pull requests. The license also switched from GPLv3 to the more permissive Apache 2.0. Fewer headaches about what kind of bigger projects you can incorporate your Dendron fork into.

It’s all markdown files in my git repo, so if the VSCode extension stopped working?

Probably either throw together my own clumsy CLI frontend for a similar workflow, or import it into Obsidian / nb and refactor there. Heck, could use Pandoc and turn them to Org files if I really wanted.

I’ve reached the age where if I notice someone hasn’t posted in a week I worry whether they died.

@jamie maybe an automated task that fires when you wake your computer / unlock your screen that updates a “probably alive as of: $TIMESTAMP” on your blog or profile.

Not that I’ve thought about it or anything.

(not much coffee; many edits)

@gizmomathboy @jamie In my case, I could put it on my /now page

@Macross It’s a concern for sure. There’s a heck of a lot vying for our attention. Takes an act of will sometimes to remember what we care about.

And of course some people are jerks.

Ah well that’s not great. ADHD meds on backorder at the pharmacy. If I hear the tech correctly, their waiting list already includes 74 orders.

Unemployed and undermedicated woo!

hackers.town: 2023-02-08 Wed 17:25

Thought I’d avoid the hassle of the crappy mail-order pharmacy by using a local one. Turns out you just end up swapping hassles around.

Unhappily pondering medication alternatives, as I don’t have sufficient executive function to spend four weeks out of every month sorting out my meds situation.

hackers.town: 2023-02-08 Wed 17:31

@gewalker True enough. I’ve done it before, for the first 45 years or so. Course, those years are why I evaluated medication in the first place.

Ah well. The best path will make itself clear.

hackers.town: 2023-02-08 Wed 17:50

@gewalker thanks and same

Mom and I chatting and in true ADHD family style we have at least two distinct and coherent conversation threads intermingling in the chat box bound by mere earthly concepts of causation and coherence.

hackers.town: 2023-02-08 Wed 20:45

@Wrewdison everybody willing to have a conversation with me, yes.

But I have learned over the years it is far from universal.

Me describing the many climates on the big island of Hawai’i

On one drive we saw jungle, desert, snow, and Idaho.
