I still miss the NeXTSTEP / GNUStep docks, with flat, lightly animated notifications visible in a fixed place.
I had a dockapp that showed who my most recent unseen AIM messages were from.

Got my new glasses. It’s not so much “holy crap I can see” as “holy crap I should not have been driving with the old glasses.”

Flashing back to the Hipster Hoopty (RIP), 1985 Mercedes 300 TD, purchased from our pastor in 2008 for the $300 she owed the mechanic, then had to turn it around so he could put some missing screws in, biodiesel with the purr of an emphysemic mountain lion and the wafting aroma of Thai food, radio got three stations and they were all public radio, needed to pop the hood to turn the engine off, the sort of car where you always carry a jump box, where a homeless guy comes up and asks “Do you have–holy shit–do you need any help?”
(and shoutout to Shadow for helping reattach the rear bumper with zip ties, after it fell off backing into a snow drift)
We’d leave the doors unlocked because why bother?
Somebody tried to steal it once overnight but apparently couldn’t figure out how. Woke up in the morning with owner’s manual in the passenger seat. Also they’d tidied up some of the mess in the back.
Hipster Hoopty (aka Sadie the Mercedes) brought out the best in people whether they liked it or not.

My eyes see “follow us on X,” they immediately roll and are often accompanied by let’s just call it a rude repetitive hand motion.

Been thinking a lot about computational notebooks and other non-IDE exploratory coding resources. You know: org mode, Jupyter, Quarto, Observable, Glamorous Toolkit, Pluto.jl, stuff like that.
The more interesting finds so far in this round of hyperfocus: marimo / @marimo_io for Python and Nodes for JavaScript.
Haven’t yet found a shiny new polyglot computational notebook / whiteboard tool. But I’m gonna keep looking for a bit.
