[2025-08-29 Fri 05:08] API 0

digipres.club - Foone🏳️‍⚧️: “There is always API 0: acting …”:

There is always API 0: acting like a human/browser/user.

The first API is “fuck you I’m doing it anyway”. Any additional API the program provides is merely a helpful shortcut

Got me thinking about Robot Framework, weird things I’d done with it in the past for work—mostly involved automating manual processes with legacy services that had nobody around to implement an official API—and wondering where RPA is today. Looks like most of the innovations in the last few years of RPA are around AI. Guess that makes sense.

The kind of automation that gets described as “scraping” and “adversarial” these days never felt adversarial1. It’s just how we did things. But yeah. It remains one of the straightest lines to getting stuff done, because an official API often takes more work than just clicking a link on a Web page.

Holiday weekend. Had the choice of taking Friday or Tuesday off—work week is Tuesday through Friday.

Shop delivery schedule is unchanged, so I opted for today rather than the handicap of a late start next week.

[2025-08-29 Fri 07:21] No job? Have you considered prison

Impossible to get a job in Az right now : r/arizona:

I’ve applied to pretty much anything around me, I’m getting denied from McDonalds and other fast food chains. I’ve tried communicating with hiring managers as much as I could but it seems impossible to even get a call back now. I’ve been told I couldn’t even leave a resume is case of openings. Indeed is a ghost town and anything else I’ve use has also only led to false hope. It’s rough out here.

My comment, tweaked since for local notes:

Over 25 years as tech dev. Bottom’s basically dropped out of that field, at least for those of us without an AI kink. Moving on down the line, all the way to automated rejections from Walmart and Burger King. Good times.

Currently working as prison commissary staff for a subcontractor at the Tucson Complex. And okay the pay is terrible ($17/hour is not bad locally I guess, just a hell of a long ways from tech pay), the environment is rigidly controlled (no phones, smartwatches, metal cups, enjoy your daily jaunts through security), the correctional officers are overworked, your customers are in there for sometimes understandable reasons, and you’re working directly with inmates.

But if you treat your team like coworkers and your customers like customers, you’re a dang hero. Literally got applause from the yard for our work yesterday. I lean hard on the quick, friendly, helpful, but no extra favors kind of service skills I used working at gas stations. Despite the constant cognitive dissonance of I AM WORKING IN SUPPORT OF THE CARCERAL SYSTEM, it’s also more direct service towards improving the lives of underrepresented and criminalized people than I’ve done in years.

Turnover rate is high partly because from an average person’s perspective it’s kind of a crap job, but the work ain’t bad for now. Better hours than McDonald’s. Check Keefe, Aramark, and just look up who’s doing subcontract work at your nearest local prison complex.
