Holy hey I just hotplugged the Thunderbolt Display to the openSUSE laptop and everything worked. That’s even a crapshoot in OS X sometimes.

oh yeah I should clarify. This is the first time Linux detected Thunderbolt + peripherals for me after an attempted hotplug.
