The linear version took 87 minutes. I bet this version goes a little faster.

Well. The linear version took 87 minutes after I switched from spinning disc HD to SSD. It was six and a half hours before that.
My first optimization would be VC-approved: throw money at it.

back down to boring old 13% or so CPU while it stuffs the results in a SQLite database.

28 minutes 17 seconds to checksum 71,080 files (246GB) and save the info, by using goroutines and a channel for the checksum logic.
Not bad.
Tomorrow I’ll play with the database logic.
