Mass firing at the birbsite itself and yet so many folks acting like business as usual. I understand the need. My brain just won’t let me do that.
Too many friends there for me to just drop the account. I can see it going like FB where I just gradually let the account rot.
I’ll keep with more time here, on cohost, and on my own site.

@gannet Getting unwanted insight into the impact of incompetence vs maliciousness — or possibly malicious incompetence — that’s for sure.
hackers.town: 2022-11-04 Fri 06:42
@thegibson yep. That’s why they’re buying big properties at a massive loss, burning it to the ground, and salting the earth.
They forget it’s electrons, not farmland. We’re not actually in the bits they think they’re destroying.

@ocdtrekkie @jerry @furtivedefect and they’ll send the cops knocking on your door if they don’t get it.
As I learned after stress-induced bout of executive disfunction when a contract ended with Amazon. You’d think I would’ve figured out the ADHD thing earlier.
Anyways yeah it’s theirs and when they want it back they’ll make sure to get it.

I’m feeling good enough today that I think I may have been fighting some minor illness over the last week or so.

@jaywilliams I aim for redundancy rather than decentralization.
Any centralized service can become hell.
Any decentralized system can suffer from entropy, a sort of social networking link rot.
Hence my accounts all over the damn place.

Oh if you’re trying Mastodon and the default interface isn’t your thing, https://pinafore.social from @nolan is a fantastic alternate view.
Imagine the basic Twitter interface with all the dark patterns removed.
But better, more accessible, etc.
hackers.town: 2022-11-04 Fri 08:22
yes it is i the self-appointed https://pinafore.social evangelist once again
hackers.town: 2022-11-04 Fri 08:23
Clarifying point: you use your existing Mastodon account with Pinafore. Think of it as a Web app. Oh that’s another thing. Works great on mobile.
hackers.town: 2022-11-04 Fri 08:33
@pressgirlk Yay! Be sure to check the settings! That’s where I got all starry-eyed about Pinafore.
hackers.town: 2022-11-04 Fri 08:36
@tedder Likewise. The lack of effective quote-tooting makes this a poor platform choice for darth. maybe cohost? Or they may just decide it’s time to hibernate until everything blows over, maybe just show up somewhere someday.
hackers.town: 2022-11-04 Fri 08:38
@estherlimtf @Unixbigot Another vote for Toot! (or saving https://pinafore.social to home screen) but the heavy influx of new users may mean new apps. I’ll be keeping my eyes open for sure.

@gannet I know you can pin a column in that column’s little control panel dropdown. When you do that, a new column is appended for the “Getting Started” view. Keep pinning columns for local / federated / lists / etc. @IamMrsGeek helped figure that one out.
minor caveat: the instance I’m on uses the Glitch fork so my recommendations probably work on mastodon main but I don’t know for sure.
hackers.town: 2022-11-04 Fri 09:08
Minor addendum for the grizzled veterans: I don’t see follow requests in Pinafore. Have to go back to your instance main view for that.
Most relevant to locked accounts, but even public accounts like mine when someone tries to follow from an instance my admin has silenced (like mastodon.social).
Nothing personal, .social users. It’s just a very big very noisy instance. When I okay the request, you’ll see me just fine. And I can follow or request to follow you — if I know you’re there — depending on your settings.
hackers.town: 2022-11-04 Fri 09:09
@gannet there may be some latency issues. Did you catch my reply about pinning columns?
hackers.town: 2022-11-04 Fri 09:15
@sieri @masukomi Personally I’m expecting a dozen forks by the end of November.

Key elements of our domestic bliss include a shared office and separate bathrooms.
hackers.town: 2022-11-04 Fri 09:31
@faineg Honestly we both consider it a huge marker of financial success. Now we’re on to the dream of maybe someday buying a place with two bathrooms.
But that’ll only happen if our finances and a the housing market overlap at the right point. 2007 memories make me pessimistic.

Looking at docs for Boto3, the Python package for AWS, when @IamMrsGeek informs me that “boto” is pidgin for “penis.”
Now I have questions probably not covered in the docs.

@Cleoqc @IamMrsGeek I think one first has to carefully decide the question they want to ask, and then decide if it is a question they really want answered.

Apparently Jack has a new sponsor.

If someone you know is looking at cohost, have them read this Twitter thread first. People — including me, alas — looking more at cohost’s cute UX and can-do attitude than its TOS.
Sharing here because I know some are already going #nobirb as they look for new homes.

@SketchSanchez I’ve been on Mastodon a few years, so clearly I’m a sucker for off-brand versions of big sites.
But yeah I’m gonna have to agree with you there.
