I tried Mastodon in 2016 and if you think folks are starry-eyed about it now YOU HAVE NO IDEA. So I ignored it until Spring 2017, and thus missed the specifics mentioned in the post.

But anyways, as a federated network of services that is not actively being set upon by a dude who thought novelty flamethrowers were a great idea, Mastodon is an acceptable alternative to Twitter for a lot of folks.
