Once again processing the dilemma of “fix my Windows partition or officially give up on it.”

I know how to fix it now: do an in-place upgrade. But I don’t see anything I want in near future Microsoft updates, and an awful lot I don’t. OTOH it’s nice to have the assumed desktop default handy when I need it.

Finally got my default browser correct (while not in a GNOME / KDE big desktop).

Each of these was recommended in one forum or another, but it was xdg-mime that actually made things stick.
