@maineblaine No sync, or at least none that I’m aware of. Feedly is still handy for that context!

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 06:15

@emilygorcenski I mean yeah – goodness knows I’ve seen it – but at the same time a CGI guestbook script can write to a text file without an additional line entry on the invoice.

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 06:18

@JamesBazan never thought I’d miss Altavista.

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 06:20

@maineblaine Oh excellent! I hadn’t even looked a little bit prior, since I do nearly all my feed reading at the desk.

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 06:50

@cordelya no surer indication that you need coffee.

So many amusing #Emacs jokes just thrown out there to clear room for the next one.

I used to spend hours trying to get the image on the right page. Now I use org-mode LaTeX and just accept that it’s impossible.

Me: “All these JavaScript frameworks. Every job wants something different. I wish orgs could settle on a primary framework.”

(monkey’s paw curls)

Every job uses React now.

@AJFish based on the stuff I’ve been contacted about, it’s not even relevant.

Doesn’t mean it’s not used or needed. It’s just not what recruiters looking for Python devs (I know) contact me about.

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 10:58

Watched this video again and felt the need to touch up my Emacs config.

@kusuriya don’t forget the universal argument.

C-u why not just use VS Code

(dang autocorrect messed up a perfectly terrible joke)

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 11:12

@kusuriya no that’s to use it. I was referring to the command to argue about it.

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 11:14

apparently i struck a nerve with the fediverse

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 11:26

@tk @yirggzmb ok but if I’m using PHP is gonna be through Laravel.

We are not at the end of the useful Internet. We may be nearing the end of the phase where the corporate Internet pretended it didn’t feel entitled to your attention and efforts.

Any of these large media sites have been useful in the last 15 years, it was rarely because of anything they did. Usually in spite of.

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 11:51

@kusuriya seems unlikely

It should surprise nobody that I am an enthusiastic proponent of the small Web and Small Tech as described by Aral Balkan and others.

The small Web exists orthogonal to the more familiar corporate Web, and always has. If you think you’re nostalgic for Web 1.0, remind yourself about “capturing eyeballs,” portals, infinite popups, “best in IE 4,” and consider you may be nostalgic for the #SmallWeb.

Good news. That’s still a thing.

She, in the other room: “Uh oh!”

Me, being mad online: “oh no what?!”

I come running in and @IamMrsGeek indicates the current news.

Me, knowing what she’s thinking: “uh oh!”

TV next to a bookshelf. TV chyron reads “animal shelter overcrowding crisis”

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 12:44

(yes I made sure to get a decent shot of the titles on the bookshelf because I know some folks enjoy that sort of thing; folks like myself for example)

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 12:50

@jackwilliambell mainly I expect the coercion to get more interesting as the novelty of the Web has worn off. It’s just another thing now. Their unicorn is in another castle, which currently they’ve labeled “AI”

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 12:58

@mcgrew that’s my thought most of the time, but job search has me paying attention to things I’d otherwise ignore.

Sooo, I’m working out a Gatsby iteration of my site so I can at least claim familiarity with the “React” resume buzzword entry.

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 13:04

@mjgardner you can tell on server load that’s for sure

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 18:02

@thegibson tech support pls: I got a mutual on mastodon.social whose posts and replies I never see. Their profile is listed here as “This user has been suspended by a moderator” though I don’t know if that’s true or just glitch-soc being weird.

Could you help me see my friend’s toots again, or verify that I shouldn’t be seeing them? Original profile:

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 18:03

@thegibson as opposed to merely bad? Okay yes, sometimes bad is bad.

shakes cane musically

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 20:38

@thegibson Is better! Thank you!

I recall something similar happening with a few of the .social accounts around Mastodon’s 4.0 release. Then I forgot about it because I didn’t see them.

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 20:44

@thegibson oh that is a whole lot of bullshit, and part of why I went from ignoring my account there to deleting it a while back. Before the latest — before that particular instance of dramatic incompetence.

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 21:58

It took some work to get things so the CSS “system font stack” pointed at my preferred fonts, but I did it.

why?

<FightClubVoice>i felt like destroying something beautiful</FightClubVoice>

No but I’ve always had a grudge against pixel-perfect design and tastefully overriding a user’s aesthetic (and readability) settings.

a git commit viewed on Github, with OpenDyslexic for the code font and Comic Neue for everything else

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 22:01

It took defining matches in my fontconfig for monospace, sans-serif, and and serif. There’s probably some combination of match and alias to override the explicit fonts in the system stack, but I ended up uninstalling those that were present on my system.

I didn’t like those fonts anyways.

hackers.town: 2023-06-14 Wed 22:10

I do like Comic Neue as a font, but that was done more to amuse me (and make it really clear I was changing something). My actual preferred prose font is Atkinson Hyperlegible.

same page as before, but using Atkinson Hyperlegible for the non-code text.
