Pups are being rambunctious and rowdy. I take them outside so @IamMrsGeek can have her meeting in peace, and of course:

@zkat I process “users” as a sort of generic default, when you don’t know what to call them and “customers” seems inaccurate but “people” sounds too respectful.

The cheesy branded identifiers annoy me, but at least it indicates a drop of thought to the folks that aren’t actually employed by the service.

If their name crops up enough times, then they get their own note.

One of those little #pkm habits that’s evolved from tedious cleanup experience.

Started fresh #Minecraft world with a found seed.

Probably a few variations thanks to the Versatile modpack.

This’ll be fine I’m sure.

An idyllic green hillside with village nearby and giant ominous keep in the distant background.

@christian using Complementary, of course. And I’ve settled on Versatile as my default modpack. Loads of just-so textures and mods.

Also leveling, but one can ignore that if desired.

She: “I hope you hear back on that application soon!”

Me: “Yes! Or [other company]!”

She: “Horse Munchie? Why would someone name their company that? I don’t understand tech.”

@IamMrsGeek and I enjoying the combined joys of aging hearing and incomprehensible branding.

@christian yeah this one’s a heavy load for sure. I tried on the MBP (M1 w/ 32GB RAM, dedicated 16 to Minecraft) and it topped out at 15FPS.

hackers.town: 2023-08-04 Fri 14:49

@christian also also: yeah part of why I settled on Versatile is because it’s got all the pretty stuff, plus Create. I’m still learning the base game but I gotta overcomplicate everything.

hackers.town: 2023-08-04 Fri 14:55

@christian doubtless there are many optimizations I do not yet know.

One thing I’ve read is if you dedicate too much RAM you get slowdowns related to huge garbage collection cycles.

Things so rough people on LinkedIn putting a timestamp on when they got laid off so you know the freshness date of their misery.

Trying out Bluesky — because this is the kind of thing I do.

And uh hm well it’s better than Threads. There’s a Web interface. More folks I like are active there.

Yes I could see Bluesky replacing Twitter as the app I log into a couple times a week to see what a few friends are up to when I remember it.

hackers.town: 2023-08-04 Fri 21:35

@xan actually interesting stuff will probably stick better when the site opens up and has less of that invite-only feel.

hackers.town: 2023-08-04 Fri 21:57

anyhow

Random Geek (@randomgeek.bsky.social) - Bluesky if you are also on more social networks than is reasonably healthy for you

update: going to the ominous keep was not a good idea.

hackers.town: 2023-08-04 Fri 22:03

@onelson behind that tree. It was very big and very full of things way tougher than my little pixel dude.

hackers.town: 2023-08-04 Fri 22:04

@onelson sorry

voxel dude

hackers.town: 2023-08-04 Fri 22:05

@onelson I am new to Minecraft, have immediately jumped into playing with mods (I like “Versatile” because it overloads just about everything). I may get into creating my own mods, but it’s equally likely that I’d work with Minetest and Lua instead.

hackers.town: 2023-08-04 Fri 22:10

@onelson Interesting! There are client-side mods with similar functionality —JourneyMap immediately jumps to mind — but server-side would allow for team mapping. Which could be very cool.

hackers.town: 2023-08-04 Fri 22:11

@onelson team play, but solo. I like.

hackers.town: 2023-08-04 Fri 22:14

@onelson Minetest seems like it could be a great foundation for that.

Oh the name escapes me but I know there’s somebody working on a minecraft-ish voxel game engine for Rust. Showed up in my YouTube recommendations a couple months ago.
