@tangentnotes “organizational extremists” why I never — IGNORE THAT EMACS ORG CONFIG — never been so insulted in my life.

uh anyways keep up the great work. Are the Patreon / ko-fi links new? I hadn’t noticed them on my last visit.

@socketwench I think of my blog posts as sort of rubber ducking my way through a problem, concept, or personal struggle. Organizing them into something suitable for communication helps sort them out in my brain.

Which yeah ends up with me actively avoiding monetization. Not for any moral reason. It just adds friction to the real, therapeutic value.

hackers.town: 2023-12-20 Wed 10:32

@socketwench Lord yes that’s a challenge for sure. I’ve mainly avoided that because — uh —

Finding the cheapest thing that can entertain me is trailer trauma shadowing my entire adult life.

Kafka presentations five years ago: “Use our open source tooling. It’s rad!” (dog skateboards across screen with a laptop)

Kafka presentations now: “Our open source tooling is hard and you’ll screw it up. Use our paid services!” (sad dog at a workstation, skateboard buried under TPS reports)

@tk @fraying GIGO never stopped being true, venture capitalists just decided there’s money to be made in garbage.

hackers.town: 2023-12-20 Wed 13:31

@tk @fraying a valid clarification.

hackers.town: 2023-12-20 Wed 13:31

@tk not even a little bit. But I gotta pay rent, so I’m learning stuff.

every “guys” from this speaker makes me twitch a little and I am glad to be off-camera

@genehack feels like the inevitable — well I want to say “endpoint” but that’s just wishful thinking and we all know it’ll get worse

hackers.town: 2023-12-20 Wed 14:23

@genehack I suspect that particular bot will function primarily as a way to cut down on the number of bug reports for a project, allowing a project to die the quiet death it deserves.

Genius, really.

Brain is absolutely in winter mode, which ain’t exactly hibernation but it sure as hell ain’t productive.

hackers.town: 2023-12-20 Wed 17:47

Not really a mystery why brain seeks downtime. Here is Outside at 4:45pm. My poor little Cupertino California phone is trying hard to make Puget Sound Outside look brighter than it actually is.

@mhoye I might suggest “not GitLab” since they seem eager to follow whatever path GitHub treads.

Remember seeing “The Fog” at age 8 or so (a ticket for me was cheaper than a babysitter) and scary undead dude behind a lady and someone in the audience shouting “Bitch, LOOK BEHIND YOU”

anyways this is roughly the same view as my earlier photo at 8:30pm.

@alys at least I didn’t vulcanize the children?

hackers.town: 2023-12-20 Wed 21:43

@socketwench is that good or bad?

hackers.town: 2023-12-20 Wed 21:43

@socketwench I mean a big persistent error message is bad, but what about the version number?
