Thinking when I got regular money coming in again I’ll buy a nice fat SSD for the Pi. It’s using the last spinning disk HD in the house and it’s fine but really time to update.

@blogdiva there have been issues in the past with mastodon.social updates briefly affecting account status, which plays hell with federated social networking.

Also, huge instances like that have enough technical and moderation issues that many small instances don’t federate with them, leading to folks only seeing a toot from there if explicitly following or boosted by a folllow.

All these big Web-scale orgs I’m applying for and whenever they ask what I’m proudest of I know what they want to hear but I don’t care about or even remember the big projects.

It’s stuff like the tiny Rails app for a homeless shelter that’s been chugging along unhindered for ten years now.

I’m proud that there was an exact need, we were able to identify that exact need, and I was able to satisfy that exact need without adding any maintenance or cognitive burden to the people using the thing I made them.

@evilchili that’s exactly what I’ve been doing and what I’ll continue to do. I don’t really have a choice with my brain’s wiring!

@jacobydave clarification is Liquid’s a plain text template engine. Markdown’s not directly related.

hackers.town: 2024-03-05 Tue 13:37

@jacobydave ah. Lovely.

hackers.town: 2024-03-05 Tue 13:38

@jacobydave that’s starting to sound like the contortions I’ve had to go through when blogging about text templating engines in Hugo, with its text templating engine.

Maybe Liquid thinks its finding directives in code samples?

(just braindumping, as I realize you didn’t ask for extra thoughts but I can’t help myself)

@genehack This time was just a field in an application form, but I started with what I typed in these toots and restructured it to sound more like an actual interview answer.

hackers.town: 2024-03-05 Tue 13:49

@genehack (and saved it in my notes for later, because I liked what I came up with)

@dragonarchitect @soatok @Loosf differently jarring, at least.

@IamMrsGeek I am real good at navigating the Apple Store wish list!

@lmorchard part of why some of my best work was on self-run projects without daily standups. Not necessarily the best jobs mind you, but that’s a separate issue.

But yeah we’d meet once a week and over the course of four meetings I got a heck of a lot done. But non-mentor pairing and daily standups were like toll bridges or something, interrupting what flow I can manage because the puzzle I’m now working on is “what do I say in this meeting and how do i say it”

hackers.town: 2024-03-05 Tue 18:59

@lmorchard (and yes my brain registers pairing session as “a meeting”)

@blogdiva Brownies are brownies. Emergency box brownies because you don’t have sufficient spoons to mill the flour yourself, those are still brownies.
