Astro has a hosted database now, and — I wish’em the best but my common sense is tingling, and won’t let me continue puttering with Astro unless a paycheck’s involved. I’ve seen the hosted add-on service downward spiral too many times.

It’s not that there’s additional functionality available through a freemium service. That on its own is cool. It’s that this service is tied directly and exclusively to the primary tool.

a) they have no choice but to sell it hard to Astro devs because the monster must be fed;

b) each tightly coupled service increases the risks when Astro-the-business ceases to exist

I’ve got snarkier thoughts about non-transferrable skills but I can’t get too smug while I’m still job hunting. If you can get paid, get paid!
