Needed to run a morning errand. Made a fresh pot of fancy coffee. Filled my favorite travel mug. Took one sip. Forgot it on my desk when I ran the errand.

@raganwald Been looking long enough that I have to bite back less helpful responses.
I still go with something like “after twenty five years working predominantly in startups, I’m looking for a job at an org that’s not actively making the world a worse place.”
They usually like that answer. Not enough to hire me, but it’s still warm fuzzies all around.

@zachleat @baldur so many great projects big and small that faded or just dropped right off a cliff because they got money to sustain development, and then the money and structural support just went away.
Part of why I have mixed feelings about “big orgs should pay for the FOSS tools they use.” Kind of a “yes and” — yes and there should be some kind of community support for budgeting assistance so sponsored projects aren’t dependent on a money funnel.

@zachleat @baldur It’s exciting! I was excited for you! It seems like such a great idea. And parts of it are.
But oh lord it’s so dependent on the whims of people who don’t really care.

@thomasfuchs thank you for bloomscrolling.
We’re moving from the Pacific Northwest to Tucson very soon, and expect going from “50 shades of gray” here to “50 shades of brown” there.
I appreciate reminders that the local spectrum at least occasionally extends beyond that.

@pathfinder @KitMuse@eponaauthor.social @actuallyautistic@a.gup.pe @neurodiversity@a.gup.pe this! I feel like I’ve got the same patterns and baseline, but the improvised tools that got me through the first few decades have worn out, and I need to be more deliberate.
which honestly is a challenge with ADHD

We’ll be driving 1200 miles in a pickup truck with four pets. We’ve got to fit the belongings of a four bedroom house into a single hired moving truck, destined for a three bedroom house.
So my question is:
Do I bring my Geek Orthodox Box of Unsorted Legacy Cables, or start the ritual collection anew when we arrive?
hackers.town: 2024-05-13 Mon 13:24
@bmac Likeliest path is ensure we have cables for core devices, maybe a couple spares, but everything else goes. When something vital turns out to be gone, we just hunt down a replacement or converter.

@thegibson My brain automatically retrieves from Real Genius anytime somebody mentions popcorn.

hackers.town: 2024-05-13 Mon 14:36
@thegibson Oh and running, because I used that line for years.
“Do you still run?”
“Only when chased.”

Stretching my brain writing some Go code that is dead-simple, but not tutorialized.

Just enough directory listing, file reading, and line parsing to count public pages in my graph.
A little Lip Gloss to pretty it up.

Go supports abstraction through aesthetic compulsion, as the fiddly bits of your core logic are so unpleasant to look at that you must hide them away in a package.
Pretty clever really.
