Arizona freeways got more crossovers than a 90s comic shop.

No pictures because all our windows are spattered with bug bits but it’s real pretty out.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 06:29

We are currently driving through Phoenix which from every bit of visual evidence seems the ideal approach.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 08:54

The three percenter sticker does not make your family SUV more intimidating.

We are in the new place. I got my SPF 50. Dogs have been walked. Cats are in decompression chamber (open truck in closed garage).

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 10:27

@genehack I’ve only seen LA’s airports but Phoenix definitely feels like it wants to be LA.

Oh that switch is the garbage disposal.

(revives the pets with smelling salts)

Saw a squirrel skitter out from the bushes into the sun. It reached a tiny patch of shade from a tree and immediately flopped down to recover. A moment later it got up, ventured back into the sun, and immediately burst into flame^H^H^H^H casually went about its business.

I’m not going outside right now.

Looking at Outside the New Place from my traditional vantage point.

As you can see, the property has some lovely landscaping. We have a quiet northern view from our biggest window, letting in plenty of light but much less heat.

Babad Do’ag, listed on my map as the Santa Catalina Mountains, provide a comforting outer fence to this view.

@nomad I was running out of material.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 15:30

@lordbowlich woot!

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 15:35

Freshly moved from Northwest to Southwest, so yeah it’s time for a new #introduction

disclaimers:

not great about CWs, especially for food / beverage / eye contact pics

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 15:43

@thegibson Hedge fund thinking? Hypothesis: investors and possibly many C-level executives believe everything of value that can be created, has been created. Therefore all that remains is resource extraction.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 15:49

@thegibson this is tied to a depressing thought I had about generative AI the other day and the laughably weak controls on quality and output.

These organizations don’t care about muddying the waters of everything created after generative AI because they genuinely don’t believe humans are capable of creating any more art, labor, or communications worth salvaging.

Whatever the surface thoughts they have on it, it’s some deeply fascist reactionary beliefs about art that drives this.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 15:55

@thegibson Honestly it’s more of a gut feel than anything, trying to find some kind of context that would make the pattern of these actions comprehensible though not what I would tag as “reasonable.”

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 16:04

@halcy and when things have calmed down enough that you can just go for a walk and admire the progress of your work. I love that.

The hackers.town hoodie I wore when we picked Jack and Barry up as kittens three years remains one of their favorite security blankets. After escaping the cat bed, Barry hid in it on the 1,500 mile drive here.

I set it next to Barry in his current safety spot earlier.

Seems he approves.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 16:33

I didn’t realize that the hoodie was his chosen spot during the drive, of course. Just that there was a spot he wouldn’t budge from until very late into the drive when both cats decided the outside view was basically a fancy version of the 300 hours of Truck Simulator they watched me play, and they wanted a closer look.

Anyways, I found the hoodie crumpled and covered in cat fur at his spot when clearing things out this afternoon.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 16:41

I’m lingering on all this because the cats were a major part of why we picked this place so far from anything we knew.

Most everything around the state of Washington was out of our price range and / or had a limit of three pets. The cats are particular about their humans. We couldn’t see them doing well rehomed, and couldn’t risk them being split up.

So we looked for affordable places, in a state where @IamMrsGeek could keep her job, in a place we could afford to keep all four pets.

And also I guess because her daughter also recently moved to AZ. Whatever. It’s because of the cats.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 16:56

@karlhigley Context unneeded. Go forth and tilt at that windmill.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 17:01

oh thank goodness I do still own clean underwear

We had to cull pretty hard-core, all the way to the final moments of loading the truck.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 17:12

@c0debabe Right?! It’s kind of a sniffly moment.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 17:19

Just so this isn’t an all-Barry thread: when they came out of hiding, Jack decided he wanted his view to be from a lap. He enjoys lap time more than Barry, but I never could get more than a few minutes from Jack.

Last night he spent a few hours in each lap as we rotated driving duties.

@MxVerda @thegibson I don’t mind at all. Thank you for asking!

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 18:49

@genehack absolutely my intent.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 19:19

Well I quickly adjusted in one context. Taking the pups out for an early evening stroll, temperature 95F with a light breeze.

It felt downright pleasant. Still heckin’ hot, but more “welcome to the beach” and less “you picked a good day to die”

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 19:51

@jamie it was very weird before we left Seattle area. 57F but 72% humidity. I was cold but sweating like I was gonna die.

This is way better.

hackers.town: 2024-05-31 Fri 21:29

Oh that’s right! Arizona is one of those states that hates voters.

This gonna be an intriguing year. Gotta make sure all my papers are in order.
