ExplorerPatcher let me put my Windows 11 taskbar on top of the screen, and a bunch of other tweaks. I am pleased.

Also got OpenShell for an old-fashioned Start menu.

Windows 11 with taskbar on top, and application taskbar icons showing Windows 7 style title previews

I don’t use Heptabase as much as I’d like, though it’s quite nice. Mostly end up with Kinopio when my processing is in a visual space.

(neither were open at the moment, but the pinned icons in the taskbar reminded me)

I don’t generally think of rote computation as an opportunity to get creative. Accountants get into trouble for that.

I’m not opposed to technology fueling creative workflows. Tech can show paths to new expressions of art — even generative AI, if used as one tool of many.

But OpenAI’s CTO minimizing the impact of their work on the lives and labor of others while the company demands access to all the fruits of that labor?

Yeah we can slippery slope that one all you like and I’m still not gonna be cool with it.

Haven’t seen lightning today but the thunder’s grumbling so constantly you’d think it was me getting ready to socialize.

That shapeless gray mass of crankiness keeps getting closer and bigger.

And I just learned that’s where the lightning and thunder are coming from.

Yep we are done with the afternoon dog walk.

Heavy cloud line approaching with clearly defined cloud boundaries on one side and threatening grey all the way to the ground on the other.

When introvert-type parents discuss introvert-type offspring’s possible marriage plans:

“We would be delighted to pay for an elopement package. Officiant, bed and breakfast for two. Somewhere cozy without room for a lot of guests.”

I mean yeah. I can absolutely endorse it. Second-best marriage I ever had was an elopement package.

First-best was at the start of COVID lockdown.

“Ooh sorry, no. I couldn’t risk your health and safety by letting you attend our wedding.”

Weather doing that thing where the humidity makes it feel warmer than the actual temperature and I wish to register a complaint.

Apparently this is a hint of upcoming “monsoon season” or some such.

Some person annoyed me in replies so I muted them.

Spent twenty minutes being haunted by that decision. So wildly uncharacteristic of me.

So as soon as dinner was done I blocked them instead. Much better.

Anyways enjoy a comic that will — unfortunately — always be relevant.

@WuMargaret It’ll be something, that’s for sure. Even the rain yesterday afternoon combined with the quality roads around here, I had to be careful driving.

Running WinDirStat over my c:/ drive before I install any more interesting stuff on it.

Out here in a desert that is somehow muggy, listening for coyotes and rattlesnakes, dodging pepsis wasps, keeping the dogs back from poisonous toads, trying not to panic tarantulas hiding from wasps, wondering what I’m doing in Little Australia.

But the sunsets are nice.
