Where is my phone.

minus ten points to any app that auto-updates while you’re in the middle of using it, restarts, and after auto-updating, starts onboarding you as if this is your first time using their app. or a computer. or oxygen.

I’ve got mixed feelings about generative AI, just like I’ve got mixed feelings about linking to Twitter. But that’s where the money quote is.

I really [bleep] hate generative AI

James Cuda, Procreate CEO

And for a sketch app I 100% agree. There are plenty of algorithmic enhancements we can use — and Procreate uses them well — before we need “just let the app draw it” or “feed my art to a training set without asking”

for a slightly more official-sounding page:

Creativity is made, not generated — Procreate®

side thought

Corporations have a long tradition of declaring “we’re never doing THING,” and then a few years, months, weeks, days later, a very quiet update informs you they are in fact doing THING.

But Procreate’s got a better track record, and I’m inclined to believe them.

@bentsai Force yourself to schedule PTO.

There are two major challenges with “unlimited PTO”: 1) it doesn’t accrue, so if you don’t take PTO you’re never getting that PTO pay; 2) there’s a strong cultural tendency to skip PTO while there’s work to be done, and at other shops accrual and expiration of PTO benefits would remind you to take a week off.

Some companies are better than others about the culture part and will push you to take some kind of vacation. Most won’t though.

@socketwench but

hackers.town: 2024-08-19 Mon 11:40

@socketwench I’m thinking about doing basically that, to give myself more room to experiment with complex home lab setups for a better chance at understanding production setups.

I’ve collected so many “PKM_TOOL is winding down” emails that I’m pretty sure the only immortal PKMs are the tightly-protected Obsidian and the obviously unmonetizable Org mode. And I’m not sure about Obsidian yet.

(EDIT: and OneNote, which so far refuses to die no matter how many times Microsoft tries to kill it)

Barry is magnanimously sharing the prized desk spot.

Jack is disappointed because he’s pretty sure the timeshare agreement meant he’d get the spot all to himself.

I have never configured more than name and email in my global Git settings.

But give me a hundred lines of well-thought-out aliases and configurations, and I will immediately see things to tweak for my preferred workflow.

She asked for a little guidance on a work grumble post and I had a bit of a satori that half the time when I post a work grumble, by the time I’m done self-censoring the whole thing is so neutered that you have no idea what point I’m making.

Maybe just say what you gotta say and if you want to burn a bridge then use the whole flamethrower

@lordbowlich All I’ve got at the moment is a psychiatric consultant for ADHD medication management.

No talk therapy provided. Which is a shame, because she’s got great insight into neurodivergence.
