got simplified (for me) org setup working well enough to get that meeting on the day’s agenda

roughly two minutes before it starts

yay me!

@lowqualityfacts I know what it’s like. I feel pretty bad for Byron.

@ireneista with my habit of reading part of a PDF, squirreling it away, losing it, downloading it again, reading another part of it, losing that, then finding them all one day

this could be a useful tool

@vees dangit this is your fault

Okay my brain definitely feels like it’s getting back into the swing of work thinking. That’s good.

@nomad I’ll take it whenever I can get it.

@thomasfuchs now every language gets to be Perl.

(thinking back on how many people used Matt’s Script Archive as their primary learning resource for Perl and the godawful effort it took to clean all the logic, security, and plain old code structure issues in their code)

Installing Gnome so I can try PaperWM

hackers.town: 2024-08-28 Wed 20:26

okay what Linux-software packaging blockhead is putting #!/usr/bin/env python3 in your packaged desktop applications? First it was lollypop, now gnome-tweaks

I don’t trust system Python. You’d think the system would’ve learned by now not to trust mine.

hackers.town: 2024-08-28 Wed 20:29

@cinebox yep exactly. It’s like “congrats gnome-tweaks, you have successfully failed to find Gnome library bindings in the venv for my static site generator”

(they specified python3 at least, but I was typing too fast to catch that)

hackers.town: 2024-08-28 Wed 20:49

Okay I can see why some folks like PaperWM. With the auto-layout, mouse friendliness, and choice of key binding mnemonics, it feels like — like —

my brain keeps saying “like if someone put CUA in a tiling window manager” which makes absolutely no sense

but it does kind of explain why I dislike it so much. Never did enjoy CUA.

excuse me while i go dust off my qtile config

hackers.town: 2024-08-28 Wed 21:01

@minego the ultrawide monitor makes me fussy about layout things that wouldn’t matter on a normal display, and reaching for key bindings that often don’t exist in defaults made for people with sane aspect ratios.

hackers.town: 2024-08-28 Wed 21:05

@minego I mean. I know this can be tweaked, but it’s an odd first impression and has me wanting to be on a more familiar, already tweaked desktop.

terminal emulator occupying something less than 20% of the horizontal space on a 32:9 display

@minego Gnome Shell continues to know what’s best for its users, and although PaperWM appears to be more configurable, the defaults sit comfortably in that mindset.
