travel prep; finding all the stuff I knew exactly where it was until I decided I needed it.

As airports go, TUS is nice and quiet at the moment.

hackers.town: 2024-09-28 Sat 07:41

I mean it’s still an airport. I’d still rather be home, with my person and the critters, than en route to a three day meeting.

But I’m focusing on the positive.

We are in row 35 of this plane, neighbor. No need for us to jump up and form a line to exit just yet.

@jtgrimes a good instinct. It did not apply for most of the whippersnappers.

It’s been over a quarter century since I last worked in (food) service.

But drop me off in front of a big expensive hotel, and I gotta find myself a spot to get oriented.

And that spot is never the lobby. It’s the dingy bit out back where the employees have their smoke breaks.

“Some kind of instinct. Memory, of what they used to do. This was an important place in their lives”

@shadowspar roughly four years back followed by five front. And of course a few sandwich shops that were both.

First actual meal in Texas, would feel weird to get anything but barbecue plate with sweet tea.

Chopped beef plate with sweet tea and a slice of pecan pie, from iron works barbecue in Austin TX

Earlier today, registered for the work event.

“And here’s your lanyard.”

“Thank you!”

“Wear it at all times.”

💭 absolutely not. I’m already obviously a tourist. I’m not ready to let “corporate tourist” add to the vulnerability profile. Not a chance in hell.

“Of course!”

@technoid_ I know in the way back Seattle had some small issue with blue badges getting harrassed on the street.

Sometimes as a shakedown, but usually just because they worked at Amazon.

hackers.town: 2024-09-28 Sat 19:08

@technoid_ oh we give Amazon our money, but that doesn’t mean we can’t mock them on the streets.

Not warehouse and delivery folks though. Just the blue badges.

Watching Blade for the first time in a long time and I kinda forgot how badass it was.

hackers.town: 2024-09-28 Sat 21:13

@hacks4pancakes A year ago I only had 22% achievements completed. But after a year of effort and 100% on a couple games, I reached

twenty percent

i need to stop getting new games

@jtgrimes I wouldn’t be surprised if I let nostalgia gloss over bits, but Blade has for sure held up better than most of the other works I enjoyed in the 90s.

On Saturday at 11:30 at night, it occurs to me there may be a down side to the weekend work event happening in a town known for music and musical events.

hackers.town: 2024-09-28 Sat 21:49

@nomad Texas has never been on my list of places to spend time in, and I prefer black tea to sweet, but I figured as long as I’m here what’s a good appropriately symbolic meal?

Anything else is gonna be whatever work picks plus anything that looks good to me.

hackers.town: 2024-09-28 Sat 21:51

@nomad @technoid_ I include buying from folks who run their services on AWS as giving them money.

But anyways, it’s irrelevant to my original point. I can always mock the pampered servants of late capitalism. Even if I need a mirror to do it.

hackers.town: 2024-09-28 Sat 21:53

@nomad oh god yes. Not too tangential, talking to a friend over concerns about their partner, I mentioned “he seems like a nice guy – which, having been a nice guy at one point, I consider a warning flag right there.”

hackers.town: 2024-09-28 Sat 23:23

We’re at about 1:30 in the morning, and for those who know trying to get to sleep has been a very “Fremont Experience” kind of experience.

But I got some green noise to mix with the background beats. Let’s hope that does the trick.

@genehack yah, during dot-com era folks loved flashing their badges. Over time – well they kept wearing their badges, but started clustering in common spots closer to work where they were less likely to get mocked by the rest of the city.
