Another lovely sunrise in #Tucson

Also it’s 69F. Nice. Disorienting but nice.

Clouds over a mountain, lit up orange and violet by the sunrise.

@bmac hobbits to the darnedest things

One of the most damning things possible in my head about an open source project:

I have no interest in seeing the latest Mastodon update. I just know they messed something up and added a few somethings that detract from the core experience, more surely than if they were a VC-funded Web app startup.

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 06:59

@tk there have been a few, but Mastodon drives the mindshare.

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 07:11

Caffeine. Everything else will have to wait a minute.

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 07:13

@m how about the smelling?

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 07:26

@ashley YES

I mean not remembering you specifically doing it, but the practice.

I was traveling for work last week and reminiscing about being comfortable enough to share airport codes and the plane and the directional emoji.

The risk is about the same, but the awareness is too much now.

I have met #ADHD folks all productive and stuff, Getting Things Done left and right. I’d ask how they do it – what’s their system? And of course they’d tell me because if you’re ADHD and have a system you can no more fight the urge to tell everyone than a CrossFit enthusiast. I take notes.

But then I bump into them a few years later, paralyzed by intense burnout and I’m like “ah. Hyperfocus. Their system was hyperfocus,” and I continue the search for my silver bullet.

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 08:25

@duhdugg I don’t know. That’s just it. I don’t particularly care. Which is freaky for me, FOSS fan that I am. Like a Mac enthusiast realizing they don’t care about the latest Apple announcement.

I am very glad you’re enjoying it though!

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 08:35

@edebill my running hypothesis backed up by loads of anecdata is ADHD vs autism etc as diagnoses are largely based on which of your neurodivergent characteristics annoyed the person making the diagnosis at the time.

It’s a spectrum? No, that doesn’t quite express the variability. It’s a gamut. Yeah, a gamut. And we all have a displayable range. And it may not show up the same on someone else’s monitor and uh – (flails) – gonna set this analogy down over here and clock in.

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 08:42

@m sure but honestly how many folks with visible disabilities have their lives mostly occupied by managing symptoms?

The longer I’m here and the more honestly I look in the mirror, the more I have to admit that’s my life too.

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 08:52

@m It’s why I bristle at “ADHD is a superpower!”

Because that thing that looks like a superpower is also one of the symptoms you need to manage.

It’s like you don’t register pain, so you start firewalking and ignoring the smell of charred flesh because “I have a superpower!”

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 10:01

@funkatron agreed.

Course I think our widespread search for a system might be its own symptom. Or maybe a coping mechanism. Keep us busy while that danged Void is breathing down our neck.

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 10:03

@nuintari definitely one for the virtues of automation, to the extent that my job duties these days often explicitly involve automation.

But automating ends up being its own trap for my brain, so for myself personally my meta-system makes sure there are always manual steps to hook into and sustain interest.

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 10:40

@funkatron there are definitely days I do not feel like “a delight to have in class, but–”

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 13:08

@overflo for common English usage as I understand it:

“Spectrum” or “visible spectrum” is used to describe all colors. At first, that sounded to me like it poetically described all possibilities of neurodivergence. But it also sounded vague.

“Gamut” is less common, but often describes whatever portion of the full spectrum can be perceived in a given color model or display technology. So it ends up being less than “literally every color” but often more than we imagine for old nerds like me who still map colors to RGB. I liked that concept of strictly bounded but still bigger than you’d expect.

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 13:11

@overflo I typed all that up from memory so it does show how I was thinking. But here’s more formal information about “gamut” in color theory:

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 13:13

@ElectricDryad there are little useful nuggets here and there but yeah there’s also a strong need to split those out from whatever’s being sold to you.

I falter constantly at that too.

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 13:50

need to fill out those autism assessment forms but they’re just gonna have to wait

because i also have ADHD and I have a long list of other things i need to have done

@mwop you’ve had a life and a career, so make sure to ask about the Camouflaged Autism Test if they seem uncertain about autistic diagnosis.

@RuthODay @blogdiva yah, Cavlin!

Scrolled back to yesterday to find this thread I was so excited.

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 17:34

@haakon I’ve a strong hunch that some things not getting done is normal / typical / whatever they call it, but our expectations are so trauma-loaded we don’t give ourselves the grace to recognize it.

hackers.town: 2024-10-09 Wed 17:53

@chris well that’s kind of a holy crap moment isn’t it?

@genehack it paints such a vivid emotional picture.

I have been in multiple relationships where it was agreed that this was our song. Sometimes with glee, sometimes with a weary sigh.

This is some really good code.

Except that bit right there. That’s the kind of duct tape a tired Perl dev would think of. Oh well, it works. We’ll fix it in PR.
