Unlike one common neurodivergent stereotype, I adore small talk.

About 30-45 seconds of it. Then I’m done and trying to escape.

when you cram as many words into a second as I do sometimes, 30-45 seconds of conversation can cover a lot of weather.

Using Ruff instead of Pylance and already I like VS Code more.

@genehack remember the olden days of the white-on-white AOL spike footer?

Chatting with mom about current events and learned that her house was part of the underground railroad back in the day.

Fascinating to have a home old enough to have that kind of history attached to it.

Just jumped into my head unrequested.

Bouncy Dog really needed to go for a walk. Barry wanted to make sure he knew it would be okay.

(Yes, the pups got their walk)

Black chihuahua mix dog trying to get my attention with licks as a black cat casually leans in from nearby.

The dog pausing mid-lick with a confused look at the cat gives him a soft head butt

Closest we’ve gotten to an argument in recent memory and it’s me trying to wash the dishes when she thinks I should be studying.

I love Mrs Geek a lot.

astro + fastapi + htmx + _hyperscript + tailwind + postgres + wait hang on i smell smoke is that my brain

ah I do so love reducing complexity

though the first few steps can be a little rough

hackers.town: 2025-02-12 Wed 14:32

oooooh

that looks awful

thank you tailwind

but hey aside from that, Astro is talking via htmx to a FastAPI server connected to PostgreSQL for simplistic full-text search

those are links btw

also I need to look into better relevance sorting

Web page with a pretty search bar, currently empty; beneath that sits an extremely janky search input containing “python”; beneath the janky search input are several nearly random-looking selected titles from my site

hackers.town: 2025-02-12 Wed 15:39

I have passed some Node.js dependency complexity threshold where sometimes my Astro site builds and sometimes it doesn’t. Can’t get mad at Astro because I’m finding actual errors in my stuff. But – errors that one would expect to have been noticed by my build system at some point in the last month.

(classic “why is this broken” to “how did this ever work” cycle there)

hackers.town: 2025-02-12 Wed 16:24

no but for reals, stumbling my way through htmx, postgres FTS, and FastAPI, while continuing to be mad at Tailwind? In one day?

It’s a lot.

search input has “python hugo” which is being handled as a search for posts with both words in their content. Result links are obsviously links, but there is no snippet summary yet to make it obvious why they are included.

hackers.town: 2025-02-12 Wed 16:56

Better be careful. If I make much more progress I’ll have to deploy it. Which will require more learning.

web site search widget containing “python hugo”, with results showing that it has been interpreted as searching for pages with both words; content snippets highlight words from search query

I did not anticipate that my shared host would be using PostgreSQL 10.23.

Current is v17. Spanking new, so I wouldn’t expect that. But v10 hit EOL two years ago.

hackers.town: 2025-02-12 Wed 23:15

Well dang. I won’t be able to actually deploy this bit of niftiness to the current host without a lot more fiddling than I feel like doing.
