@angdraug @tindall@cybre.space @adasauce well, sorta. Rubygems happened because of folks like me wondering where CPAN for Ruby was.
Pip happened because the setuptools devs burned out on thankless tedium.
Besides, Redhat & Debian proved to language devs that nonfunctional package management is not exclusive to proprietary platforms.

Trying out new-to-me stuff like nnn.
Oooh I should blog about this.

uhhhh
I don’t see nearly enough error checking in the code that’s calling my service.

There’s definitely a nap in store tomorrow. Possibly a couple of them.

@deutrino well sure! For the core 80% of my day, apt etc are great. But one learns to never use the system version for development. System packager priorities are different, and that’s okay - especially on open platforms where I can see and fill the gaps I care about.

Yep more good motivation to push my IndieWeb closer to the front of the line.

Ooh! Looks like Perl’s use diagnostics but a) prettier; and b) not part of standard lib.
Something like friendly-traceback should be part of Python standard lib - like, yesterday. Should’ve been there for years.

I didn’t even need to click. I knew which XKCD that was.
Course, I confirmed after I retweeted.

It’s a nice space. I highly recommend the instance for anyone with a fondness for that 90s Mondo 2000 mix of tech cynicism and optimism.
Plus, “Hackers” watch party nights. Recommended but not required.

@AFresh1 Ooh enjoy! My hour or so of quiet non-drawing time tonight will be going to Raku.

This thread walks us through an earlier verse in the extended rhyme that makes up our history.

Just over 20 years ago, I convinced my BBS admin to give me an extra hour of user time so I could finish downloading a 2MB text file (someone’s homebrewed RPG game IIRC).
Just a couple minutes ago, I grabbed 2.8GB of PDFs (design books) from Humble Bundle and didn’t even have time to top off my coffee.
Reading them is an entirely different matter.
hackers.town: 2019-12-11 Wed 21:04
@GeoffWozniak oh that’s always been a problem for me. Had something like 200 sci-fi books on the shelf when I was a kid, and even with being grounded to my room a lot I made it through less than half.
There’s some value in this as a resource library – not legally required to read every title you have – but I still need to index with Calibre or similar.

@thegibson “absolute indifferent and besides, I lost my keybase login again” counts as not opposed, I suppose.

Yesterday’s highlight: accidentally tossed my keys down the building garbage chute, which leads to a space beyond dumpster diving, where the apartment managers cannot reach. Then I lost my replacement keys for about an hour.
Today’s highlight: I still have my keys. Also, I got a good nap.

@ella_kane @thegibson oh goodness yes. In fact, I just posted a relevant toot on that very topic ๐โ ๐๏ธ

I’ve handed out almost half my business stickers. Time to start thinking about the next batch design.

@cstanhope Right? Spent a year trying to come up with business card designs, then realized I’d much rather somebody gave me a sticker!

TFW you get exasperated and you tell someone “ok boomer” and they tell you “‘OK Boomer’ is a slur,” and you say “yes i know especially the way i was using it”
hackers.town: 2019-12-11 Wed 22:52
@drwho That’s the more important priority for sure.

@rabcyr @lordbowlich could be worse.

Current status: trying to figure out this code I wrote the other day.
No it’s cool. I may not be writing much Perl these days, but if Perl taught me anything it’s how to reverse engineer my own code.
hackers.town: 2019-12-11 Wed 23:20
@rabcyr I’ve got a postscript book around here somewhere. I had it on the TOLEARN list ages ago but never followed through.
hackers.town: 2019-12-11 Wed 23:26
@rabcyr the drawing with code of course fascinated me. I think I veered over to POV-Ray, then Processing, instead of opening that Postscript book.
