@neltnerb @radicalgraffiti that is an excellent question, and I don’t know the best answer.
Personally, I tend to add accounts as they get boosted into my timeline or we have a good chat in someone’s thread. If I get more curious, I go from their profile to the about page for their instance.

Occasionally I’ll peek into my “Federated” timeline in search of accounts my friends find interesting.
Also! Before I settled in on a favorite, I’d set up accounts on different instances via http://joinmastodon.org just to see the local atmosphe.

Was nice out for the pup walk. Got to see the whole crow family today. The pair came down to check in like usual. There was Junior right behind for the first time. Just long enough for something along the lines of:
“hey is this Food Human? FEED ME FOOD HUMAN!”
Before one of the parents chased Junior all the way back to the nest.
I think Junior’s supposed to stay out of these exchanges until they know the protocol.

@ceejbot I have today left to decide whether to pay beyond the Hey trial. I’m still not sure, which probably means “no.”
Mainly because I have not so far been much of a “checks their email” person with the inboxes I have.
