I hope you’re doing okay out there.
It has been just over a year since I started the prison commissary gig. Four tens at a physically involved job teaches you there is nuance to the “four day work week.” I spend two of my three days off in recovery.
Age could be a factor there, but there is more.
The job uses a lot of brain power considering how little of my brain I get to use. They keep things very restricted and constrained. Makes sense. This is a state prison complex we’re talking about. But recently notebooks got added to the list of contraband items. My little leuchtturm joins a list that includes drugs, weapons, cigarettes, computers, phones, smart watches, vape pens, and pens for that matter. I, Random Geek and Bearer of ADHD, must remember the relevant things, in the right order.
I manage it well enough, give or take. It does take some extra processing. All I can do by the end of the day is a little Revenge Bedtime Procrastination. A tiny bit of programming, but mostly computer games. Modded Minecraft is a particular favorite.
But hey. The world of tech is pretty much on fire at this point. The total dissolution of a caterpillar in its chrysalis. Will it be a butterfly at the end? I have my doubts. You never know.
So I have ten hour work days and tech is currently a nightmarish amorphous blob. Maybe it’s not so bad to fill up some free time with gaming. It’s not like I was using that time to sleep anyways.
It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t go overboard on a hobby, though.
I record some of the sessions with OBS Studio. I edit them with Shotcut. Learn and try something new every time in that process too. Usually, I post the results on YouTube.
Check out my videos, if you like. They are generally of the “Let’s Play” variety, with an intentionally low and slow approach. The idea is to let it cook and see where I end up, without rushing anything. I am having fun, destressing, and relaxing. To the best of my abilities. Would very much appreciate if you did the same. To the best of your abilities.
I even added a Video category for Random Geekery. All my stuff comes to rest on this site eventually. And heck. If somehow I get a couple spare brain cells charged, I may even do a “Let’s Code.” Low and slow, of course.
Take care of yourselves and the folks you care about. And try to have some fun!
