Not much. Getting mad trying to update postgres on macOS. You?

hackers.town: 2021-01-04 Mon 12:49

BTW the Big Sur password update prompt is the most annoying user interface I have encountered since Windows Vista. Maybe longer.

Current status: trying to break up a fight between Jumpy Dog and Stupid Robot Vacuum.

Sudden flashback to interview at tiny WebCo where we got to $$ talk. Founders balked at my (low because I didn’t know market rate yet) request w/ “we don’t pay ourselves that much” & I was sad for them.

I keep using convenience libraries, and then end up needing to add so much safety checking that I can’t even see the convenience code anymore.

Your irregular reminder that @nolan’s https://pinafore.social/ is an absolutely delightful front-end for Mastodon when you find the TweetDeck-ish default too busy.

My site’s almost back to the level of IndieWeb functionality I had before. Once I have that — in a more maintainable form this time — I can get back to improvements.

About time I sat down and listened to some of this work.

@onan That sounds fantastic!

@BillPosaune Agreed! Pretty sure I heard links in the sound chain that leads to the Residents.

Listening to folks celebrating the new year — loudly, you see — right next to our bedroom window, you see — got me feeling like Archibald Beechcroft, Esq.

I understand they are depressingly bereft of foresight or they wouldn’t be gathering in any significant groups at this point in history, so I comfort myself with the knowledge that eventually one of us will die and regardless it it’s me or them, I won’t have to hear them.

Update: the test failed, and continued to fail despite my three hours of refactoring, because I forgot to run python manage.py collectstatic.

Logged into a Teams meeting a few minutes ago and the Manjaro KDE toolbar says “Skype is using the microphone” and I feel like I’ve learned something dark and forbidden.

Well damn.

This track’s the first time I became aware enough of MF DOOM’s voice to go look for more.

Reminding myself that learning an entirely new framework would take more time and effort than trying to find and fix the bug in my jQuery + Datatable code.

Probably.

hackers.town: 2020-12-30 Wed 23:53

Well the test is still failing but at least now the code is much more attractive.

Fighting the urge to go for a little walk to the parking lot where somebody’s been revving their farty car for several minutes. Maybe bring a hammer.

Problem with Pythonic code is you can spend an awful large chunk of your day trying to figure out what a library author thought was “obvious.”

hackers.town: 2020-12-28 Mon 20:35

You don’t get “obvious” delusions in Ruby or Perl. Ruby’s all about developer delight. The code may be weird but it made them happy.

Perl’s all “I took your groundbreaking CS whitepaper and made a bong out of it” so you’re in for a treat no matter what.

Trying to come up with the quickest summary of Librepay for my mom and I came up with “nerdy patreon” and that’s pretty good actually.
