Been enjoying an XBox Game Pass subscription for several days so I can explore big titles I wouldn’t otherwise have the budget for.

Key takeaway: AAA games are boring.

I think most good games run on one good idea. The great ones get two or three. This is not science. I will not be citing references.

The AAA games have that too. I think. But it’s all buried under the budget need for mass appeal, so their one good idea is buried under a dozen mainstream ideas. Indies and mid-range titles don’t have the budget for that much cruft, and I love that. My brain runs on novelty, and AAA so far doesn’t cut it.

@whalecoiner We’ve been rolling down this hill long enough to notice there are deaths, injury, and hardship caused by our decisions. Facebook in Malaysia jumps immediately to mind. But yeah collectively we work hard to convince ourselves otherwise.

@darq And nothing of value was lost, since I avoid both of those sites.

hackers.town: 2023-11-08 Wed 08:09

@darq This was during an online install on a fresh partition, so I was a bit flummoxed. A specific component of KDE Plasma couldn’t be found.

ah nothing like the brain not noticing AdjectiveNounNoun and AdjectiveNounsNoun type declarations in immediate proximity and going “why did they define AdjectiveNounNoun twice?”

@earthshine hey as long as nobody gives them a gift horse its fine. I mean ten years of bloodshed and loss, but other than that.

@tithonium Hopping a bit right now, with majority of attention in Dendron and Trilium.

@tithonium If you like outlining and mostly Markdown, Logseq is great. If you like mostly Markdown and tons of extensibility, Obsidian is great.

After a couple hours of chasing fish with food and making good progress, I decided that wasn’t how I wanted to play #Chillquarium. Reset and trying a real time challenge instead. Don’t feed them extra. Just let the fish grow on their own.

Like the opposite of a speed run.

It may be chill, but #Chillquarium is still basically the capitalism game. So I sell off the fish that don’t generate much ongoing revenue as soon as they mature. To buy more fishes, which may or may not grow up to be profitable piscines.

@chrisjrn I have heard “I need to finish eating something,” but I used to work at a buffet, where the phrase served as an admission of defeat.

@chrisjrn I mean yeah that describes the average American buffet diner rather well.

Answering stupid security questions.

“Who was your high school mascot?”

Ah, the beloved Tdm6tkVQ8zhjRSbBquc8DYqrQ2xAdmLa.

Their chant took an hour.

The other team would forfeit and go home because it was bedtime.

I hate those “what street did you grow up on?” or “who was your high school mascot?” security questions. Anybody who needs that info can find it online with a little effort.

@masukomi @CynAq @actuallyautistic@a.gup.pe @actuallyadhd@a.gup.pe My group had Time Blindness as a -5 or -20 depending on severity, with the severe version requiring per-turn IQ checks to avoid losing actions in combat.

hackers.town: 2023-10-31 Tue 08:53

@masukomi @CynAq @actuallyautistic@a.gup.pe @actuallyadhd@a.gup.pe that’s why we had the severity split. The lesser version was just an extreme quirk that impacted social obligations but not survival stuff.

The extreme version was our friend Derek. But yeah it could’ve been addressed by existing disadvantages. We were just having some fun with the game system.
