It seems like a few years ago folks were rediscovering pipes and coreutils. That’s awesome.

The last year or two it seems like folks have been rediscovering sed and awk. Cool.

Are we a couple years off from folks rediscovering Perl? Because we seem to be looping.

The more languages I use, the more I appreciate Perl’s insistence on making the easy things easy.

They all make hard things possible. But it’s shocking how hard some of them make the easy things.

@xerz If you don’t need what a language provides, of course it’s going to be awful.

hackers.town: 2020-01-14 Tue 13:24

@xerz Fair point. I use tinyrepl and keep my dependency stack small (start with Mojolicious, build from there as needed).

I freely admit that I’m starting to love Perl again because I haven’t had to look at other people’s production code for over a year. Plus it turns out production Python is just as bad, but hidden behind nice formatting.

Probably but I can dream.

It’s a little distracting outside.

Clicking “run all tests” was a tactical mistake.

@gizmomathboy oh I don’t know enough about awk to have anything against it. But when I see these sed | awk | uniq | jq pipes I just wonder why not start with “more.”

hackers.town: 2020-01-14 Tue 19:27

@gizmomathboy not to be confused with more of course.

Took two hours to complete.

Good opportunity for a nap.
