@taylorhadden /home has its own partition again, so at least settings are more or less stable between distro hops.

I tend to be a little conservative with my personal site, as one goal is for it to still look how I intended ten years after I die when some curious soul is looking on archive.org.

I’ve been doing it that way a long time, but let’s just say I had to learn first.

Testing the Windows Copilot experience.

25 years of surveillance capitalism, billions of dollars spent on artificial intelligence, and you show me ads for actual trees.

If I’ve got to live in a tech dystopia, can I at least get some decent ad targeting?

Thanks to a bit of genius from @IamMrsGeek Jack and Barry have their own beds up a little too high for the dogs to steal and velcro’d in place so they stay that way.

@grmpyprogrammer The best brands, like the best jokes, rely on a kernel of truth.

It’s not that I’m morally opposed to gambling. It’s just that I already get out of bed every day and frankly that’s pushing my luck a bit already.

@tithonium currently obsessing over Grim Dawn, but yes! And I believe I had noticed similar. Very confusing.

I’ll be getting back to them after I tire of the GD game.

Once again tempted to merge my “wiki” and “tumblelog” ideas and just point a domain at a TiddlyHost site.

@minego @deafferret@octodon.social I gradually scaled up. Tried the trial a few days. Yep. Tried the $5 monthly for a month. Yep.

I use search engines a lot as part of my processing, so I bumped up to the $100 annual so I wouldn’t worry about an upper limit.

@taylorhadden I don’t mind table widgets in WYSIWYG editors but I hate them when my brain is in text mode.

hackers.town: 2024-01-03 Wed 08:37

@taylorhadden @jalefkowit@octodon.social factually yes, but a) to my overly cynical brain that sounds even darker; and b) mostly I think we’re describing a mood rather than a practice

hackers.town: 2024-01-03 Wed 11:02

One of the reasons I realized “introvert” wasn’t quite right and started digging in the direction that led me to ADHD: I have trouble engaging my brain if work Slack / Teams is too quiet. Like – if it’s just me I may as well work on my Web site or something.

@pdcawley oh yes. Textile is so nice and straightforward, with clear purpose.

#TangentNotes doesn’t do special rendering for tables or definition lists, but as long as it doesn’t argue with me about what I type? I can set font to something monospace and not care.

@taylorhadden @mjgardner @nyanotech AS A dev-type person, I WANT plain text notes and git-like versioning SO THAT I can understand how they work using my existing mental models and process them with my existing tools.

anyways

I could absolutely not explain the technical merits, but #SiYuanNote uses dejavu to handle synchronization and history. Lists “Git-like version control” as a feature. It’s neat. But it’s way easier for me to understand #Tangent + a Git repo that I manage myself because I already know Markdown and version control.

Went through the hard part of an Astro iteration for the site, remembering how collections and slugs and that dynamic route filename syntax work. Next is the tedious part, making sure all 647 posts build correctly. I’ll mix it in with the fun part of playing with layout.

Tomorrow maybe.

AI chatbot replies in Discord search results. Two things I dislike individually which, when combined, produce something somehow worse than the sum of their awfulness. Truly a gestalt of ick.
