@Crell Definitely that author’s opinion that mutable default arguments isn’t a gotcha. I see it treated as such far more often.

Here’s a band concept for you.

“Castle Rat is a Medieval Fantasy Doom Metal band led by the Rat Queen on a mission to expand and defend ‘The Realm’ from those who seek to destroy it.”

I think there needs to be a comma in there. “Medieval Fantasy Doom, Metal.” Sounds more NWOBHM to me. Something to be played over an AD&D 1E session.

I know folks like their big editors. Sometimes I do too. All those super-extensible editing environments like Neovim, Emacs, VS Code (even though —well, Microsoft — plus it’s stolen the title from Emacs for “Eats Memory And Constantly Swapping”).

hackers.town: 2024-05-15 Wed 08:06

Big editors are fun, but I really do prefer $EDITOR to be smaller and more focused. Plugins are okay, but not so much “redefine your whole workflow and learn a new packaging system twice a year just for your editor.”

Been thinking “I’d like to learn Go” for — when did I see that talk by @briandorsey? Ten years ago? Twelve? It wasn’t last week I know that much.

I poked enough to understand basic structures, but that’s it.

Yesterday in the middle of writing Python code, brain goes “Bored now. Let’s do this in Go,” and by this morning I’ve got ten pages of notes, and have absorbed more practical information about the language than in the previous decade.

Needed to run a morning errand. Made a fresh pot of fancy coffee. Filled my favorite travel mug. Took one sip. Forgot it on my desk when I ran the errand.

@raganwald Been looking long enough that I have to bite back less helpful responses.

I still go with something like “after twenty five years working predominantly in startups, I’m looking for a job at an org that’s not actively making the world a worse place.”

Just sort of smudgy out there now from the camera, and it basically looked like a normal (somewhat bright) night sky.

My eyeballs kept relaying a message that something confusing was going on. Nothing I could see, but kinda unsettling just the same.

From the way Jumpy Dog was acting tonight, she’s probably been having a similar experience.

Me on first coffee: “Let’s do large biomes this time.”

Spawn in giant desert.

Well, let’s work with what we got.

Getting better. Okay, time for the actual day.

In #Logseq I use the heading property and nested blocks for clear structure when zoomed into a block. It’s nifty. But I must type the property every time.

Today I was adding notes for Python dependency management tools. Got tired of typing heading:: true.

I identify heading structure in outlines on paper with a little emphasis let nesting show me the heading level. I matched that with CSS.
